Uncover the richness of Jewish history through our publications

Tarbut Publications

Since its establishment in October 2014, Tarbut has embarked upon a distinct mission: to translate books written in either English or Hebrew into the Romanian language.

It is truly regrettable that during Romania’s Communist era, memoirs of survivors and general Jewish literature was heavily censored or even prohibited from being published. As a result, not all historical information has been known among subsequent Romanian generations during the period of 1950-1989. Our publications and translations aim to add as much as we can to the body of knowledge about this historical period.

about the book

The author, Mr. Pal Robert Zolopcsuk, who was born in Sighet and has memories of the post WW II Jewish Community, is not only an artist in his own right but also an art teacher at the Sighet Cultural Center. In this work, Mr. Zolopcsuk has captured several important Jewish and non-Jewish sites throughout the city of Sighet. The drawings, rendered in black ink, depict many of the most beautiful examples of the Sighet Maramatiei architecture including Jewish and non-Jewish architecture.

A special addition at the end of the book includes a map of the city and a list of street names from before 1945 (all streets mentioned are as of 1914), along with their current equivalents. This is especially useful for descendants seeking to locate their family's addresses in Sighet, as the names were changed during the Communist era.

Overall, Mr. Zolopcsuk's work is an important contribution to the preservation of the city's architectural heritage and a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Sighet.

about the book

History of the Jews in Sighet 1600-1940 is a general history of the Jewish People in Sighet, written in English.

Ion J. Popescu, a Romanian journalist and radio newsman, dedicated his life to uncovering the history of the Jewish people in Sighet. He collected data from the Hungarian archives, as the Maramures region was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, when Romania gained independence. Additionally, he conducted research on Romanian archives for the years 1918 to 1940. Ioan J. Popescu passed away in 2017.

This volume is of great importance to descendants of the Maramures region, as it provides not only historical facts but also details on famous rabbis, major synagogues, and Jewish life before 1940, including schools, yeshivot, Zionist organizations, and professions practiced by Jews, among other things.

Furthermore, this book can provide valuable genealogical information for those researching their family history.

about the book

Ten-year-old Felicia Steigman is confused by the sudden disruption to her life when she is expelled from school and forced to wear a yellow star. But she is completely unprepared for what happens next — the forced abandonment of her home and a grueling journey, overseen by cruel Romanian Nazi collaborators, to Transnistria, a squalid place that doesn’t even exist on a map.

Surviving three years surrounded by devastation and death, Felicia’s innocence disappears. When her family’s suffering is silenced and dismissed, Felicia boldly confronts the past, speaking out against injustice and commemorating the forgotten killing fields of Transnistria.

About the author

Felicia Carmelly, a Transnistria survivor, was born in Vatra Dorne Romania, on September 25, 1931 and was deported at the age of 9 to Transnistria. In 1959, Felicia and her family emigrated from Communist Romania to Israel. Three years later they immigrated to Canada, where Felicia earned her master’s degree in social work.

Felicia founded Toronto’s Transnistria Survivors’ Association in 1994 and published the anthology “Shattered! 50 Years of Silence: History and Voices of the Tragedy in Romania and Transnistria” in 1997. Felicia Carmelly passed away in 2019.
