ONGOING project

Student Journeys to the concentration camps of Birkenau and Auschwitz

Our program consists of a pre-study of the historical period in general and a detailed look at the ways the Holocaust took place among the Jewish communities of Maramures and Northern-Transylvania .

We follow the routes on which our families were deported to Auschwitz. Our three-day journey from Sighet to Auschwitz consist of in depth discussions and time for reflection. Students are accompanied by their teachers for emotional support.

After the Journey we encourage students to share their experiences with others during a school assembly. The students who visited Auschwitz make a presentation about their journey, answer their fellow student’s questions, and can hopefully encourage those who haven’t yet went, to try and undertake the journey the following year.

The project appears yearly on the local media, in newspapers, radio and TV.

Our journey to Auschwitz not only addresses the Jewish Holocaust but is particularly relevant in current day Romania today, as it addresses other minorities such as the Roma who were also murdered during the Holocaust and are discriminated against heavily in Romanian society.
